While our goal is to guide you to achieving success at Illinois, we understand that you may encounter circumstances that can affect your enrollment plan. Although there is no formal process for a student to chooses to stop attending the university, students planning to leave the university should consider all of the following:
Registration (current or next semester)
- If the semester has not started
- You should cancel your registration for all registered terms.
- An undergrad student: It is recommended you communicate your stop out plans with your Academic College.
- A graduate student: Must request a academic leave of absence through the Graduate College.
- If the semester has started
- You must contact your Academic College to initiate a withdrawal request.
Financial Aid
- If you are receiving any financial aid you should contact the Office of Financial Aid to discuss any possible impact to your financial aid package.
- Student Loan recipients must complete exit counseling when they have separated from the university
Student Account
- It is critical that you clear all outstanding balances on your student account. Be proactive in checking on any balance due by logging into Student Self-Service.
- Be sure to routinely check your student account or watch for email notifications from the Bursar’s Office. Adjustments to tuition, fees, or financial aid may occur after your departure. Failure to pay any current or future charges, will result in collection efforts.

University or Certified Private Housing
- If you have a Housing contract, consult with University Housing at 217-333-7111 to discuss cancellation of your contract.
- If you live in Certified Private Housing, contact PCH at 217-333-1420 to discuss your options.
International student in F-1 or J-1 status
- Please contact International Student and Scholar Services at 217-333-1302 ext. 1 to discuss your situation and necessary steps.
University e-mail
- Your NetID access to university accounts will be removed approximately one year after your last semester of registered classes.
