Introduction
The academic coding structure was developed in 2002 to work within the Banner system, allowing flexibility on each campus to respond to academic program needs, maintain the student record and allow detailed reporting, among other (functions). The UI-Integrate Academic Structure team designed this coding structure in conjunction with the Budget and Planning offices, Institutional Reporting offices, and Admissions and Records units at each campus. Many decisions made at that time remain in effect today but there have been some important changes and updates to the coding structure. Now that the University is preparing to upgrade to Banner 8.x, and many new codes have been created for Global Campus, it is important to review the various models of coding structure currently in use.
In this course you will learn how different codes in Banner work together to describe and identify the student curriculum and other information about the student record. First we will look at program codes, and how parts of this code identify the academic curriculum to which a student belongs. Then we will look at several other types of codes in Banner that describe Student module-related components across all curricula. We will look at how to find program codes in the official University Codebook, and finally, we will look at how these Banner codes influence other student system processes within the university system.
